How it works
Each state writes its own driver handbook, and its permit test is drawn from it. So every question here comes from your state’s handbook, in our own words, and links to the page it is based on. Answer a question and you see at once whether you were right and why. At the end, your score is held to your state’s pass mark, where the state publishes one.
Signs follow one national standard in every state, so they have their own page: the road signs test, with pictures.
Want the whole bank?
The Pass Pack opens every question for every state we cover, full practice exams built like your state’s (its length and pass mark where it publishes them, marked at the end), and your missed questions until you get them right. US$9.99 once, no subscription.
Questions about the permit test
Is this the official DMV test?
No. Driving Test Practice is an independent practice site, not part of any state DMV or agency. The questions are written in our own words from each state’s official driver handbook, and every answer names the section it comes from.
How many questions are on the permit test?
It depends on the state: from 18 in Pennsylvania to 80 in Michigan, and 20 states do not publish the number. Each state page gives its own number and pass mark, and the permit test by state lists them all.
Is it free?
Yes. Every state has a free practice test, and the road signs test is free too. The Pass Pack (US$9.99 once) opens every question for every state we cover and full practice exams.
Do I need an account?
No. Nothing to sign up for. Your answers and missed questions stay in your own browser.
How do you know the answers are right?
Each question is written from one passage of the state’s handbook and links to it, and a second session checks every answer against the handbook before it goes on the site. How the tests are written explains the whole process.
